Protect buildings from the direct and indirect effects of lightning

The likelihood of lightning striking a building can never be precisely determined, as the physics are very complex. There are many variables involved such as structural shape and composition, the local terrain and the structure of nearby trees. It is important to remember that lightning does not have to strike a building directly to cause serious damage to electrical equipment that may be inside.

Lightning can affect a building directly or indirectly. Direct effects refer to the physical damage caused such as the shattering of wood, masonry, windows and other poorly conductive materials as well as the ignition of fires. A further direct effect of lightning strikes is the burnout of electrical power and equipment caused when high voltages and currents are injected into a power distribution line.

Indirect effects are a result of the earth-voltage rises that are caused when the flash dumps thousands of currents into the earth, as well as the electromagnetic fields that are generated by the lightning strike currents. These lead to voltage surges in power and signal circuits which can burn out any electrical equipment that is connected. Buildings or structures with above and below ground cabling systems are particularly vulnerable, and telephone and data lines and underground plumbing systems can also transfer lightning surges into a property.

Lightning rods have been the most widely used and effective deterrents against lightning strikes for a very long time. They provide an alternative terminal for lightning and prevent it from striking a structure. As lightning protection specialists, we can equip your building with high quality lightning protection and carry out safe and efficient installations. Our lightning rods are constructed from conductive materials and significantly reduce the risk of damage to your building and its inhabitants.

When we install your lightning protection systems you can be sure of the quality of our workmanship and services. We strive at all times to offer competitive prices and a service that meets every need of every individual customer. We are Sheffield based but we regularly serve a nationwide customer base.
