The world’s tallest flagpole was located in Britain

Flagpoles are not as common in the UK as they are overseas. Americans, for example, are well known to take every opportunity to display their flag proudly. In the UK, on the other hand, we choose to display our nationality by drinking copious amounts of tea, queueing in order, and in many other ways. However, we must mention that once upon a time, the tallest flagpole in the world stood proudly in Kew Gardens, in South West London. Its origins were Canadian, and as you can imagine bringing all 75 metres of it to our country was no easy feat.

Originally standing at 91 metres, the Douglas fir tree which was used to make up the flagpole was carefully and successfully felled from a logging camp. It was then securely transported to Vancouver by lorries, and later placed aboard a freighter to be brought to the Thames River Estuary. Over the years it had to unfortunately be shortened numerous times due to safety concerns, until it eventually had to be felled in 2007. Considering it was installed in the late 1950s it is safe to say that the flagpole had a good run.

Flagpoles can be a great addition to the landscapes surrounding a public building or any other outdoor area. While there are no regulations regarding the flags themselves, planning permissions for these types of installation are always required.
