Testing provided for lightning protection systems

There can be no doubt that lightning is one of the most destructive forces of nature that there is. Lightning can strike and cause severe damage to the buildings, but can also cause severe damage through indirect strikes. All it takes is one bolt of lightning to hit the ground near a property to cause an electrical surge which can completely destroy a building’s electrical system. It is because of this sheer destructive power that lightning protection systems are put into place.

Lightning protection systems, like all other systems, require rigorous testing. Without testing, a system may fail which can place a property or the life of a human being into jeopardy. Lightning protection systems operate by taking the brunt of the lightning and allowing it a safe passage through the building. These include lightning rods and earthing products, which harmlessly transfer the majority of the power through the protection system and into the ground. This is necessary because there is no system that can ward away lightning strikes or avoid them completely.

As you can see, the fact that lightning can and will strike wherever and whenever highlights the needs for protection systems. It also highlights the needs for regular testing to protect yourself, your property and nearby properties from the dangers. Under British Standards EN 62305-1:2011, all systems must be tested at least once every twelve months. However, if you live in an area which is particularly susceptible, it is important to have the systems tested more regularly.

We don’t just install systems that are fully compliant with all relevant articles of British Standards, from BS7430 to BS6651, but we pride ourselves on performing rigorous lightning testing. We don’t use subcontractors; instead, we complete all testing ourselves, using only the most well trained, CITB-registered engineers specifically trained in lightning protection. From lightning rods to earthing systems, we can provide comprehensive testing to ensure that your systems will not fail when they are needed and that they are in optimal condition. If you are in need of having your systems tested, then please do not hesitate to contact us.
