Protecting properties with communication masts

When lightning strikes it tends to go straight for the highest point on the landscape, particularly if it is made of a conductive metal. This is a problem for properties with communication masts on their roofs. These are designed to catch and transmit signals, but their height and exposure makes them an easy target for lightning, especially when they extend several metres above the roof.

Property owners in this situation should take steps to protect themselves, even if they see a neighbour with a much taller structure. It is difficult to predict when lightning will occur and the path it will take to ground, so it is always better to be prepared rather than taking the risk.

Properties at risk of getting struck by lightning should be fitted with a protection system made up of conductors to create a safe path to ground. Rods can be used to provide extra control over where lightning will strike, reducing the risk of it hitting the structure elsewhere. These can be incorporated into the protection system to ensure the current flows safely away from the property rather than surging into wiring and other conductive materials.
