Major lightning storms can strike at any moment

On Wednesday 1st July this year we all enjoyed the soaring temperatures and blazing sunshine on the hottest day of the year so far. Many inhabitants of the North East of England, however, found themselves in the centre of a spectacular lightning storm that cut the power to a staggering 40,000 domestic properties. The incredible thunderstorm wiped out the power to parts of North Yorkshire, County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. Teams of engineers were deployed the following day to tackle the effects, and Northern Powergrid spent two days restoring the power to people’s homes.

Lightning swept across England and Scotland after the hottest July day on record in many places across the UK. As the storm moved across the Pennines, scores of Sheffield residents drove out of the city to witness a huge cloud flash with continuous lightning and the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation issued a tornado warning for many parts of the Midlands.

Some business premises sustained severe damage from large hailstones. In some areas the storm only lasted for twenty minutes, but caused thousands of pounds worth of damage in that short space of time. One business owner lost 5,000 panes of glass from greenhouses as a result of hailstones bigger than golf balls. The events were particularly unique as we saw an almost continual lightning storm without the presence of thunder or rain.

The storm reflects the unpredictability of lightning and the fact that we can never know when it will make an appearance. When severe lightning storms strike, they bring with them the risk of damage to property and injury to people. Our team of Sheffield based steeplejacks can offer a quality lightning protection, testing and management service to minimise the risks to your property and the people in it. We offer a reasonably priced service and we provide our protection systems throughout the whole of the UK and many parts of Europe.

Our lightning rods are constructed from highly conductive materials and provide buildings, tall structures and church spires with effective resistance to lightning strikes.
